牛血清白蛋白，BSA，又称为组分V或Cohn V，名称起源于BSA的分馏法—Cohn冷乙醇法，Cohn冷乙醇法是由哈佛大学Edwin Cohn教授于1946年发明的。当时基于战争创伤治疗对注射级别蛋白的大规模需求，Cohn教授在较低的温度下改变血浆的乙醇浓度和pH值，使其所含蛋白在不同乙醇浓度下析出，在第五个析出的组分中主要成分为BSA，所以BSA又称组分V或Cohn V。当下，Cohn法仍然是非常普遍的BSA分馏法，最主要的还有热休克法和色谱层析法。
